Etsy Keyword Research: How to Find Keywords That Convert

A practical guide to Etsy keyword research — find the exact phrases buyers use to search for your products and build listings that actually rank.

Etsy keyword research is the process of finding the exact words and phrases buyers type when searching for products like yours. Get this right, and your listings show up for the right searches. Get it wrong, and you're invisible no matter how good your products are.

Why Keyword Research Is Different on Etsy

Unlike Google SEO, where content length, backlinks, and domain authority all play major roles, Etsy SEO is almost entirely about keyword matching. Etsy's algorithm is built to match buyer searches to listings with the most relevant title and tags.

This makes keyword research on Etsy more impactful and more immediate than on most other platforms. Change a listing's title and tags today, and you can see a difference in views within days.

The challenge: there's no keyword volume tool built into Etsy itself. You have to research using a combination of Etsy's own search behavior and external tools.

Method 1: Etsy's Search Bar (Free and Powerful)

The fastest keyword research tool you have is Etsy's own search autocomplete.

Type your product into Etsy's search bar and don't press enter. Watch the dropdown. Every autocomplete suggestion is a real, popular buyer search. These are the actual phrases people are typing to find products like yours.

Try variations:

  • "gold necklace" → see what autocomplete adds (women, layered, dainty, minimalist)
  • "personalized gift" → see what types of personalized gifts are popular
  • "printable planner" → see specific formats and styles in demand

Work through the full alphabet too: type "gold necklace a," "gold necklace b," etc. Each letter can surface different buyer searches.

Method 2: Study Your Competitors' Listings

The top-ranking listings in your category have already done the keyword research. Study them:

  1. Search for your main product on Etsy
  2. Open the top 5–10 listings in new tabs
  3. Read their titles carefully — what phrases appear repeatedly?
  4. Check their tags (on desktop, you can often see tags listed below the description)

Patterns you spot across multiple top-performing listings in your niche are signals of high-value keywords. These are the keywords buyers consistently respond to.

Method 3: Use a Keyword Tool Built for Etsy

Several tools exist specifically for Etsy keyword research:

  • eRank — shows search volume estimates, competition, and trends for Etsy keywords
  • Marmalead — similar to eRank with additional trend data
  • Sale Samurai — keyword data with Etsy-specific analytics

These tools are paid but can be worth the investment if you're managing a larger shop or launching frequently.

What Makes a Good Etsy Keyword?

Not all keywords are worth targeting. Evaluate each keyword on two dimensions:

Search volume: Is anyone actually searching for this? Low-volume keywords won't drive meaningful traffic even if you rank #1.

Competition: How many listings are you competing against? A keyword with 200,000 results is much harder to rank for than one with 8,000.

The sweet spot: moderate to good search volume + manageable competition. Long-tail keywords (more specific, 3–5 words) often hit this sweet spot better than short, generic keywords.

Example:

  • "necklace" → high volume, millions of competing listings (avoid)
  • "gold necklace women" → good volume, more manageable competition
  • "dainty layered gold necklace women gift" → moderate volume, much less competition, buyer has high purchase intent

Long-Tail Keywords Win More Sales

Long-tail keywords are longer, more specific phrases. They convert better because buyers who type specific queries know what they want.

A buyer searching "necklace" is browsing. A buyer searching "personalized gold initial necklace birthday gift for girlfriend" is ready to buy.

Include at least 5–6 long-tail keyword phrases in your 13 tags. They won't drive massive volume individually, but the buyers they bring convert at much higher rates.

Apply Your Research to Titles and Tags

Once you have a list of strong keywords, use them strategically:

In your title: Lead with your highest-volume, most relevant keyword. Build the rest of the title using secondary keywords separated by commas.

In your tags: Use your remaining keywords as individual tags. Each tag should be a complete phrase, not a single word.

In your description: Weave your primary keyword into the first sentence naturally. Repeat it 2–3 times throughout the description.
